About Larry Cantú

Larry Cantú is an international oil and gas attorney with over 40 years of experience. Larry served as Senior Counsel for Anadarko Petroleum Corporation from 2008-2018 where he supported Anadarko’s interests in Australia, China, Indonesia, Kenya, New Zealand, offshore Canadian Maritime Provinces, South Africa, and Trinidad & Tobago. During his years at Anadarko, Larry was stationed in The Woodlands, Texas, in Jakarta, Indonesia and in Singapore. Prior to joining Anadarko, Larry worked for BP in Jakarta, Indonesia and in Luanda, Angola where he supported BP interests and operations in Indonesia and Angola. Larry also worked for Atlantic Richfield Company (“ARCO”) where he supported the company’s operations and acquisitions interests in Brunei, Indonesia, Qatar, and the United Kingdom. He also served as Chief Counsel for ARCO in Indonesia. At BP’s request, Larry remained with the Indonesian operations when BP completed its acquisition of ARCO in April of 2000. Larry also served as Counsel for Union Texas Petroleum, a company later acquired by Atlantic Richfield Company. While with Union Texas Petroleum Larry was based in Houston and in London. He supported Union Texas Petroleum’s operations and interests in Argentina, France, Indonesia, Pakistan, Spain and the United Kingdom.

  • Divestiture of Anadarko’s interests in Kerr‑McGee China Petroleum Limited and its interests in producing fields in Bohai Bay, China in 2014 and of Anadarko’s several Indonesian operating companies in 2012;
  • Corporate and asset acquisition agreements by BP and Atlantic Richfield Company in the run up to the Tangguh LNG project;
  • Negotiation of the Pay for Production principles which modified the long‑standing supply arrangements among the various producing consortia supplying natural gas to the Bontang LNG plant during a period of natural gas supply shortages;
  • Chaired Indonesian Petroleum Association Legal Subcommittee providing comments to proposed modifications of Indonesian petroleum legislation in 1997-1998;
  • Coal Bed Methane project negotiations in China;
  • Due diligence management in both the acquisition and divestiture contexts;
  • Compliance monitoring and training;
  • Major office real estate contracts and related dispute in Jakarta, Indonesia
  • Residential real estate matters in Jakarta, Luanda and Singapore;
  • International dispute and litigation management;
  • Recruitment & development of junior legal staff.

  • Provided oil and gas legal training for staff of Badan Pelaksana Kegiatan Usaha Hulu Minyak Dan Gas Bumi (BP Migas), Indonesian state oil and gas regulatory body established under the Directorate General of Oil and Natural Gas of The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MIGAS) of the Republic of Indonesia
